GUIDE TO ENGAGEMENT RINGS – PART 3 – SIZE

Given that each ring can be tightened or widened, I assure you that once you have given the engagement one, your better half will be looking forward to wearing it! Therefore, putting a too large or too small ring on her finger would ruin the magical moment and it would be a real shame to go without it  for a few days in order to adjust its size …

So how can you take the size of a ring? The first step is: try to secretly get a ring that she usually wears. Do your utmost to chose a jewel she wears on her finger ring, however if you only have a ring that she usually wears on another finger, then do not worry, the jeweller will be able to evaluate the right proportions with a ring holder. In any case, remember that fingers are different sizes from each other and that the ring has to push past the knuckles.

Also, keep in mind which her dominant hand is because same might be bigger than the other one: for example if she is left-handed, left fingers might be slightly larger than the right hand fingers.

Here are some tips to detect the right measure:

– trace the internal diameter of the band on a sheet (or make a photocopy);

– slip it into one of your fingers and draw a line where it stops. Your jeweler will then take care of identifying the size with the help of a ring holder;

– press the ring on a bar of soap and leave the shape imprinted … but then remember to clean the ring from the soap residues!

If you are still unsure, buy a slightly larger size ring because narrowing the band is easier than making it wider.

Generally speaking, remember that it is almost impossible to resize rings with pave or eternity settings (i.e. rings with diamonds mounted on the entire band), so avoid buying these models if you are unsure of the finger size.

Last note: fingers shrink in the cold weather and swell in the heat. Atmospheric conditions, humidity, altitude and even the time of day can affect the size of a ring. Take this into account when choosing your dream ring!
