Rooney Mara & Joaquin Phoenix

When I think about celebrity engagement rings, three types of jewelry immediately come to my mind:

– the ring with a huge and beautiful stone, and this is something we have seen many times (and it is the most frequent option);

– the ring with an huge and beautiful stone, which also shows some elaborate details that make the creation unique and personalized;

– the third and rarest option is the ring with a small stone compared to Hollywood standards, which does not immediately catch the eye, yet absolutely original in design and very representative of the couple.

The ring that Rooney Mara received from her talented Joaquin Phoenix undoubtedly belongs to this third category. These two actors form such a very reserved couple that they have never formalized their relationship by a public statement, but the ring that, at one point in 2019, popped up on Rooney’s ring finger and declared it all.

Rooney’s ring, certainly in platinum, has a hexagonal central setting flanked by two thin baguette diamonds. The real beauty of this jewel is the central stone: it is a very rare portrait cut diamond, with an extended table surrounded by thin step facets that recall the emerald cut. The gem appears thin and delicate and takes on the appearance of the glass plate typically used in photo frames. In fact, this cut has Indian origins and was historically used in rings that kept a small miniature portrait underneath. You immediately notice the transparency of the diamond, which must have high purity characteristics and be as free of inclusions as possible.

Both the upper and lower part lack the sparkling facets with which we usually imagine diamonds, so this cut gives the ring that minimalist look that characterizes Rooney, who usually does not wear jewelry.

The diamond is the most resistant stone in the world, yet when cut this way, it gives the impression of being fragile and delicate, just like Rooney, whose skin appears so fresh and white, showing imperceptible make up even during big events.

The hexagonal shape and the bezel setting (which, perhaps may represent Joaquin’s sense of protection towards Rooney) have a clear and without frills design, as much as the flat and extended table reminds me of the soothing atmosphere of a crystalline and placid lake. The symbolism lies in the fact that the portrait cut diamond is transparent, just like true love is pure and sincere.

Although neither the designer nor the price are known, I believe that behind the creation of this ring, undoubtedly there is an expert cutter, as great skills are required to manage such a thin cut. The carat weight does not matter, the craftmanship matters much more.

From this precious little joy, characterized by a cut so out of the ordinary, all the originality, personality and sensitivity of this couple emerges and I sincerely love it.

Every engagement ring tells us something about the couple, but some rings appear to give information sincerely and communicate that essence and appearance coincide perfectly. When I find them (and I’m sure this is the case), my heart bursts with enthusiasm.
